How do I set up an ancestor altar?
An ancestor altar is your primary point of contact with those who came before you, and setting one up is simpler than you think. King, find a small table, shelf, or dedicated surface — ideally in a quiet area of your home. Cover it with a white cloth, representing spiritual purity and the realm of the ancestors. Place photographs or written names of your deceased loved ones prominently. Always include a glass of fresh, clean water — refreshed regularly — as water is the bridge between worlds in nearly every African spiritual tradition. Add a white candle to bring light to their realm. Place offerings they enjoyed in life: food, coffee, tobacco, flowers. Do not place photos of the living on the altar. Speak to your ancestors daily, morning or evening, calling them by name. Thank them. Ask for guidance. They are listening, and they are invested in your elevation.
