Timbuktu was one of the world’s great centers of learning, Queen. Its university, Sankore, educated scholars in mathematics, astronomy, law, and philosophy. The libraries held hundreds of thousands of manuscripts - African scholarship that’s still being studied today. This was when Europeans couldn’t read. Timbuktu traded gold and knowledge.
